In the summer of 1943, Hester Moore was employed in the communications department of E.I. DuPont. She was called into the head office and recruited for a secret project to do the same kind of work. This would take her across the country to the Northwest, which began with two years in the desert amidst hasty construction. Getting caught in her first sand storm almost makes her rethink this decision. The nature of the construction was necessarily vague. Only a hand full of scientists, key technicians and high-ranking government officials had any idea of the magnitude of this project. Consequently, it was shrouded with mystery and secrecy. The Manhattan District included several projects and labs, but this story takes place in a most isolated area, Hanford, Washington. From the train into Pasco, WA, the hour-long bus ride to the construction camp in Hanford, WA, waiting for the luggage to catch up and walking into the barracks for the first time and told, "Just follow orders and not ask questions." Every worker’s life was affected by this project in some way. By maintaining secrecy and keeping our Ducks in A Row, the Atom Bomb was a huge success.
