This little book has two goals: it is a lyceum of thought and a critical reflection. You will be introduced to episodes in elementary schools that impact successful teaching and learning for young children. To get the most out of this book, you must be brave and suspend your power. Then you are ready to join your students as they feel their way through social challenges because you remember when. Read and discuss this book with your students and your children. Let me know what you think.S. Winzer is an urban public schoolteacher. She uses the guidance approach that facilitates an interactive learning environment where she is a responsive human being first. Her students engage in an ongoing process of making meaning through developmentally appropriate academic activities. Her goal is to eliminate classroom management as she has come to consider discipline as a process of humiliating a child because the child makes mistakes. The teacher has all the power in discipline, which contradicts an environment of ongoing engagement with children. Both natural and predictable consequences happen in the learning process. Consequences are based on applying the appropriate response. However, the nature punishment in the classroom does not allow for encouragement and guidance as it does not seek to teach but rather to subdue. Thus, the learning from consequences is compromised.
