A poor boy who grew up in devastated South during the Depression. A rich girl who loves him, even though her father is bad. World War II is starting, and the rich girl's father, a crook, forces the boy away from his girlfriend and into the war.The boy goes to war and becomes a highly decorated hero. He returns, refuses to return to the South, and stays in California.He meets an older woman who works for a newspaper, and does night study to get a college degree. The boy never knows girl has his baby. The girl marries the doctor who delivered the baby, and the boy goes back into the Navy as an officer, stationed in China. There she meets a gorgeous Chinese girl. Unknown to the man, the Chinese lady is a commie officer. They fall deeply in love but cannot marry as US citizens. They have a Chinese wedding. The brother is also a Chinese commie.Korean War breaks out, and Mao Tse–tung takes China from Generalissimo Chiang Kai–shek. Military Colonel Genies has to plan to end the Korean War. He is shot down in China, and man officer is now recruited to go to North Korea as a rescue colonel. The China girl is the top officer to negotiate for the colonel. The man reunites with his Chinese wife, but her brother kills his sister. The man is completely devastated and returns to California as a civilian, refusing to stay. The man writes a novel, and a movie buys it. The man goes to Hollywood to advise on the movie. One day at the beach, a young girl is drowning. The man dives in and saves the girl, not knowing it is his daughter. At dinner at Swanky Club, his long–lost love plays a song, and the man and woman meet. Love is still there. They go to Las Vegas to get married. They then go back home, and he sees the girl whose life he has saved. Everyone is very happy. He shows her his colonel ribbons and gives them to her. She is very happy.
