In the south of Azgoth, near the city of Airron, Lucas Nathan Terell lives with his brother Alec, and their father, a retired knight named Jacob. Lucas has endured lifelong nightmares. Nightmares that disturb his family with his screaming. Terrible dreams that he can never remember having about a dragon he has never seen. And more recently, a nightmare of a girl whom he has never met before.
Unlike his brother, who longs to join the country's military and live a life of honor, Lucas prefers the life of a farmer. A life without reputation or acclaim. And despite his skill as a swordsman, or his knowledge of the wild places surrounding his home, Lucas has no desire to see himself as a hero. He is not interested in the life of a soldier, and he does not wish to take up the responsibility of being the son of a knight. But when he is tasked with delivering a message to the country's capital, Lucas finds adventure inadvertently thrust upon him.
Traveling north, Lucas faces conflict. He finds his way littered with unforeseen dangers, becomes embroiled in royal intrigue, and learns that he may be far more capable than he ever imagined being.
Haunted by his own recent failings, he is forced to confront uncertainty when the plans of wicked men are laid before him. And he acts with courage when the life of an innocent is put in ultimate danger.
Lucas' journey challenges his notions of bravery. It forces him to question his self-worth, and his experiences leave him to wonder if he can truly rise above his fears and become the hero others may already see in him.
In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, will Lucas be able to overcome his doubts? Will he play a vital role in Azgoth's future? And will he be willing to confront the threats that seem to be growing just beyond the safety of his home?
